Retro Gaming Expo 2019 — Missed a Meeting for This

Retro Gaming Expo 2019

It has been well over a week since I was at the Retro Gaming Expo in Fisher Mall and then uploaded the vlog, so I got to think over everything I saw and experienced over 4 hours of being there while getting myself hopped up on caffeine and other legal stimulants. You should be able to sense the weird mix of enthusiasm and dejection from the vlog as I alternated between having fun looking at retro gaming stuff and getting pissed at something else.

While I was there, I was being pestered to go to some meeting in Greenhills, and I was becoming less and less interested as I wanted to get more footage. Then again, that’s just what happens when I’m being forced out of my house against my will. It may not have been the best way to handle it, but I’m quite pleased with the results.

This blog is about the details that were either omitted from the vlog or need more explanation.

NOTE: Opinions expressed in both the vlog and this post were based mostly on my first-hand experience while attending the event. If I get anything factually wrong, it wasn’t on purpose and I’m open to corrections. Reader discretion is advised.

Retro Gaming Expo Notes

I was going to do the same format as previous event vlogs like that of Cosplay Matsuri 2017, with actual review bits in between shenanigans kept in 15 minutes, but I felt too lazy to write a script and record voice-overs. I didn’t feel like scheduling the video on Wednesday with the risk of never finishing it at all like previous events I attended but ended up not releasing vlogs on.

I might finish editing the raw footage for those and just upload them as throwbacks at this point. It’s still content, after all.

So I ended up with a half-hour vlog with me mostly shittalking about whatever I saw there. To my mild surprise, I actually a pretty good response from people who saw it from me having shared it on Aya Ezmaria’s Facebook group. It’s quite encouraging and I’m already looking forward to the next convention.

Either Sticker CON on March 16 or Manila International Auto Show on April 4. Hopefully, I attend both if nothing else gets in the way. There’s also Cosplay Carnival on March 23, but I won’t be able to go to that one.

For those who don’t know what my vlogging setup is, it’s just an SJCAM M20 action camera mounted onto a Zoom H1 portable audio recorder. The camera is also hooked up to a power bank for longer recording, and I usually dick around for around 2 to 3 hours on the event floor.

I also took B-roll with my Nikon D5100 with a Sigma 24mm super wide lens, but that footage went unused because I’m an indolent twat.

The footage and audio is then loaded and synced up in the video editor and cut up to show the bits where I actually say something roughly interesting.

And boom, that’s how I make event vlogs, for the most part.

AVDRshow #12 — I Was a Part of a Failed Esports Event

AVDRshow #12 on PPSL

The renewed interest in the music festival mishap that was Fyre Festival due to the recent release of the Fyre Festival documentaries in Netflix and Hulu, as well as my invigorated efforts to create regular content on the Facebook page, culminated in me making this video retelling my 2011 experience of being a part of a failed esports event. (more…)

Vidyagamgams #3: Epic Business Takeovers

Activision Blizzard CFO Dennis Durkin

In March 2018, I attempted to do a video game show, but was not able to follow it up. Having a regular show cuts into other content creation efforts when you’re doing everything alone, not to mention daily life itself. Therefore, whatever I do come up with to fill that void, it can’t strictly be a news show. But for now, I’m just fishing topics from online media sources and message boards as I try to figure out what I can do with this. (more…)

AVDRshow #9 — Depression, Stings, and Broken Bones

AVDRshow #9: Wasps

In this edition of the AVDRshow, I talk about selling kidneys, depression, dangerous stinging insects, and broken bones. I should do more of these regular shows more, and I’ve been coming up with more ideas for new shows lately. I’m not really trying to be Philip DeFranco, but becoming efficient with making talking head videos means I’ll be able to make content in between big projects. (more…)

AVDRshow Highlights for First Half of 2018

AVDRshow

On February of this year, I finally got the much-coveted fiber optic Internet connection installed here at home, thus giving me the ability to live-stream and upload big files with ease. I thought I could finally pull off all the plans I’ve been sitting on over the past few years, but I had also accepted a full-time job, thus procrastinating on it for the next six months. One of the things I had done halfway was start the AVDRshow—sporadically live-streamed/uploaded in the Facebook page. (more…)

Mea Culpa on Having Called Mafia a “GTA Clone”

Mea Culpa on Calling Mafia a "GTA Clone"

After much deliberation, I’ve decided to make a full post to take responsibility for something I’ve gotten flak for. At the start of my retrospective video on Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven, I committed the gaffe of calling the game a “GTA clone”. Some may be puzzled at what may be wrong with that, and I’m still a bit on the fence on how wrong it really was to have done so. At first, I thought it’s like referring to caviar as “salty fish eggs”, which may upset connoisseurs, but is certainly true. But in this case, as I’ve found out, that would actually be a flat-out lie. (more…)

Cosplay Matsuri 2017 — A Good Year-Ender

Cosplay Matsuri

This may be the perfect way to end a year full of personal breakthroughs—becoming the ring announcer of Manila Wrestling Federation (and doing it well) and figuring out how to cover events my own way. The latter has been more hit than miss this year, after having tried making event vlogs for a few years now. Cosplay Matsuri 2017 seems like a great way to cap things off and celebrate the realization that doing this content creation thing isn’t just a waste of my time. (more…)

No Man’s Sky Zombie Horse Postmortem

No Man's Sky

Welcome to a stupid idea i had to pull off to start the new year. It’s outdated, irrelevant, and dumb as all hell. However, I had to do it to open the year as it had been gnawing at the back of my head for so long and 2018 is the year I start cranking out videos. I had to take the challenge, and I started it by putting up such a stupid ass video that would then motivate me to quickly bury it with more videos. It’s basically political commentary disguised as a super late postmortem review of No Man’s Sky. (more…)

Andy Kunz Fight Night — Impromptu Juggling Act

Andy Kunz Fight Night

A week after MWF Balikbayan (late blog post on that coming soon), I had to do another ring announcing gig in the same venue. It was the Andy Kunz Fight Night, an amateur kickboxing event. I did think it was going to be a relaxing day of me just shouting out names of two guys about to beat the shit out of each other, but it turns out I had to do more things than that. In fact, particularly for this event, I had to do even more juggling than I usually do with MWF events. (more…)

Geek Day 2017 — Still an Okay Time, I Guess

Geek Day

A week after vlogging Cosplay Mania 2017, I felt confident enough to do more event coverage. It just so happened there was indeed another one the following week in SMX. Geek Day 2017 was a smaller and more intimate event, focused on things I’m more into. On paper, that seemed like a good way for me to make up for not vlogging AsiaPop Comicon. While I did take a bit longer to finish than Cosplay Mania 2017 due to work and procrastination, I did learn a few things on how to cover events I didn’t plan in advance to attend. (more…)

Cosplay Mania 2017 — Hit and Miss

Cosplay Mania

The event ended up being a mixed bag, it seems. Cosplay Mania 2017 was alright, as far as my experience is concerned. However, plenty of reports suggest they had plenty of problems during those two days. Perhaps it was bound to happen when they tried to do just a bit more than in previous years, or maybe something in their planning went down the drain sometime during the event. Whatever went wrong there, I may have circumvented most of them through both opting for a silver ticket (I bought a gold ticket last year) and just sheer luck. (more…)

MWF Road to Fate — Near Perfect Amid Compromise

MWF Road to Fate

It took me almost two weeks to finish all the content related to this event, from the match videos with commentary, the vlog with me discussing behind-the-scenes stuff on my end, and to this very blog post. While I do want to explain in detail why I took ye olde sweet time to make a post about MWF Road to Fate, all I should really do here is warn you that this blog post is half a rant and half a biased review of this wrestling event. After all, I worked in the event as well. (more…)
