Ip Man 3 [Review]

Ip Man 3 starring Donnie Yen

While Ip Man 3 had been out and passed by the time of this writing, I felt compelled to put something out about this movie. Perhaps it’s my martial artist side that kept me on this, or it could be my (failed) filmmaker side. In any case, it’s a good thing that I stayed with it since I feel that this movie deserved a look regardless. It does well as the final installment of the series, with a good bit of thought put into its production. (more…)

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice [Review]

Despite all the negative press it was getting on release, I was able to bite the bullet and see this movie due to a friend’s invitation. I can say that while it’s not exactly the flat bomb that most were expecting (especially when people heard that the Batmobile had machineguns), it’s not that much of a pleasant surprise either. There’s quite a bit that must be sifted through in order to properly judge it, or at least my subjective experience of it. (more…)

Going Clear [Review]

Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief

It took me a while to actually put up something on this documentary, but I just had to with the recent events concerning a certain religious organization here in the Philippines. I’m not insinuating anything, but it did remind me that I still haven’t posted anything on this documentary, which is perhaps one of the best of 2015. This film is meant to send chills down spines and raise eyebrows regarding Scientology and the C-word (no, not THAT C-word, the other C-word). (more…)

8 Videos and Films on Financial Disasters

Financial Disasters

Amid financial ruin, Greece just had their bailout referendum on whether they will agree to the conditions set by the European Commission, the International Monetary Fund, and the European Central Bank (they voted no). Elsewhere, stock markets in China have experienced their biggest plunge since 1992. The last great economic recession we’ve had was back in 2008 with the American housing crash, and we may be in the verge of another one. If you don’t know what any of this means, then perhaps it’s time to learn a bit about financial disasters and how they happen. (more…)

Kung Fury: A Love Letter to Inner Childishness [Feature]

Kung Fury

When the trailer first came out, it was already enough to make testicles explode all over the Internet. It had all the good stuff — impossible physics, kung fu, time travel, scratchy video quality, vikings with machineguns, Hitler doing Tae Bo, the MicroBee, and tons of desert chrome. It was one of those Kickstarter projects that seemed too good to be true, and it even more seemed so like those other 2012 Kickstarters when things quieted down after the initial hype. Then came this half-hour donkey punch that makes no damn sense, but is so damn good. (more…)

Lucy [Review]

This wasn’t meant to be posted at first as I had watched Lucy when I thought the hype train had already gone past. However, I was kind of forced to watch it again by friends and I felt compelled to finish this review. This seems like what happens when a teenager sees Fight Club for the first time, then plays the game Prototype, and writes his own movie script. (more…)

Similarities Between NAIA Ambush and Cocaine Cowboys

This entry is quite late as the news item cited in here is no longer that recent as of this posting. However, the observation made was just too apropos to not share. It’s fascinating, although not exactly uplifting bit of information. However, it does add quite a bit more intrigue to the backstory of such an unfortunate incident. (more…)
